ECoS-Sirim Ops Klik2.0: ECoS and SIRIM officers inspecting consumer electrical appliances in a convenience store selling consumer electrical appliances located in Putatan.
PUTATAN, January 22 - The Energy Commission of Sabah (ECoS) advises sellers of consumer electrical equipment to only sell electrical equipment recognised by ECoS or Suruhanjaya Tenaga Malaysia (ST) in terms of safety and energy efficiency.
Operasi Pemantauan Bersepadu Kelengkapan Elektrik (OPS KLIK), a joint monitoring operation by ECoS and SIRIM QAS International Sdn. Bhd. (Sabah branch) that was conducted at several consumer electrical equipment shops in Putatan recently, found that there are still consumer electrical appliances, including electric fans, electric kettles, electric ovens, light bulbs, extension sockets, wiring cables, and power plugs, that do not have the ECoS-SIRIM or ST-SIRIM safety labels and the ECoS Energy Efficiency Rating Label for relevant electrical equipments.
"Many sellers are unaware about public safety risks from selling consumer electrical equipment without ECoS and ST approval, which can cause property damage and endanger lives," explained Ts. Muhammad Azuan Zainuddin, Director of Safety and Monitoring Department ECoS, who led the OPS KLIK operation.
He also added that the public favours unlabelled consumer electrical equipment due to its lower price compared to equipment that has received ECoS or ST approval. "The ECoS-SIRIM and ST-SIRIM safety labels are important to prove that a piece of consumer electrical equipment has been inspected and tested according to established standards and is safer to use compared to unlabelled consumer electrical equipment," said Azuan
Meanwhile, Ridwan Saham, Chief Operating Officer of ECoS, said, "OPS KLIK is an important ECoS initiative to educate sellers of consumer electrical equipment in Sabah about our responsibility in regulating sales activities to ensure that the consumer electrical equipment sold meets the requirements of the Electricity Supply Enactment (EBE) 2024 and the Electricity Supply Regulations (PPBE) 2024, which states that only approved and labelled consumer electrical equipment with the ECoS-SIRIM, ST-SIRIM Safety Labels and the ECoS Energy Efficiency Rating Label can be sold to the public."
Failure to comply with Regulation 107 and Regulation 111(3) under PPBE 2024 can result in the electrical equipment being seized, disposed of, or removed in accordance with Regulation 110(2) and Regulation 113(2) under PPBE 2024. Ridwan also emphasised ECoS' commitment to continue enforcement operations and monitoring the sale of unapproved consumer electrical equipment to ensure that only safe equipment is sold to the public in Sabah.
