ECoS Continues to Emphasise the Importance of Electrical Safety Among Competent Individuals in Sabah

Seminar and Dialogue on Electrical Enactment and Regulations with Competent Persons in the East Coast Region -  held for the first time in Sandakan, involved 250 participants consisting of Electrical Competent Person from utility companies, installation personnel, electrical contractors as well as students from accredited training institutes, based in the East Coast of Sabah.

 

SANDAKAN, 6 November - The Energy Commission of Sabah (ECoS) continues to
initiate its efforts to raise awareness about electrical safety and sustainability through
the organisation of a Seminar and Dialogue on Electrical Enactment and Regulations
with Competent Persons in the East Coast Region.
The seminar, held for the first time in Sandakan, involved 250 participants consisting
of Electrical Competent Person from utility companies, installation personnel,
electrical contractors as well as students from accredited training institutes, based in
the East Coast of Sabah.
"In line with the enforcement of the Electrical Supply Enactment 2024, all Competent
Persons serving in Sabah must obtain a competency certificate from ECoS," said
Ridwan Saham, Chief Operating Officer of ECoS, adding that all competency
certificates from ST issued before January 3, 2024, can only be used in Sabah for a
period of 12 months as outlined in Regulation 60, Electrical Supply Regulations
2024.
He stated this in his speech read by Jefry Nuri, ECoS Director of the Industrial
Operations, during the seminar which was also attended by representatives from
Sabah Electricity (SE), local authorities, installation contractors, and Competent
Persons held at the Industrial Training Institute (ILP) Sandakan today.
"After 3 January 2025, only competency certificates issued by ECoS will be valid in
Sabah, and in an effort to ensure that Competent Persons in Sabah have
ECoS-issued competency certificates, all ST Competent Persons are required to sit
and pass the Electrical Supply Enactment 2024 examination and its regulations
before being allowed to apply for an equivalent certificate," said Ridwan.
T o facilitate the holders of ST competency certificates in attending the course and
examination for the Electrical Supply Enactment 2024, ECoS has accredited a total
of 17 training institutions to conduct the courses and examinations with a fee of
RM185 for all candidates across Sabah.

This initiative will be carried out across the state to increase public awareness about
electrical safety and as a reminder to Competent Persons to always ensure that any
work under their supervision is carried out in accordance with the established safety
regulations.
"ECoS will not compromise if any accident occurs due to negligence by the
Competent Person," said Ridwan.
