UMS receives accreditation from ECoS for gas competency programme in Sabah

KOTA KINABALU: Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) has been accredited by the Energy Commission of Sabah (ECoS) to conduct gas competency programme training and examinations in the state.

This significant milestone was achieved following a memorandum of understanding signed between ECoS and UMS.

ECoS chief executive officer Datuk Abdul Nasser Abdul Wahid handed the accreditation certificate to UMS assistant vice-chancellor (industry and community network) Professor Dr Coswald Stephen Sipaut.

The accredited training facility is beneficial to various parties. It serves as an enabler in the effort to promote skilled human capital with high-income potential in the gas supply industry.

Currently, the industry relies on training institutes based in Peninsular Malaysia.

The programme offers specific courses for gas engineers, gas engineering supervisors, gas fitters, and responsible persons for gas installations at premises.

Qualified and experienced instructors from UMS, ECoS, and gas industry players in Sabah conduct these courses.

Through this programme, the target number of gas-competent persons will be 441 by 2030.

This marks an increase from the existing 24 individuals before ECoS was established.

This initiative will also create opportunities for engineering companies in Sabah to venture into the gas industry, ensuring that the cost of developing infrastructure involving gas piping systems for restaurants, self-service laundries, and other establishments is low, affordable, and compliant with safety standards.
