UNLICENSED LAUNDRY OPERATIONS POSE SAFETY RISKS

KOTA KINABALU - Laundry operators in Sabah are required to obtain valid approval and a gas licence from the Energy Commission of Sabah (ECoS) for using piped gas systems in dryers and water heaters on their premises.

To improve understanding of gas piping system safety and raise awareness about the licensing application process including installation approval (ATI) and operating approval (ATO), ECoS organised a Gas Supply Compliance Seminar today for laundry operators requiring gas usage licences.

Speakers representing ECoS, Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN), BOMBA, and Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) were also invited to conduct their respective briefings.

Datuk Ir. Abdul Nasser Abdul Wahid, Chief Executive Officer of ECoS, stated through his speech delivered by Ridwan Saham, ECoS Chief Operating Officer, "As the regulatory authority for the energy industry in Sabah, ECoS must ensure that gas piping systems at laundry premises are designed and installed according to the required standards and are safe for use."

He added, "Operators who fail to comply may face legal action under Section 4 (3) of the Gas Supply Enactment 2023. Penalties for non-compliance include fines of up to RM100,000, or imprisonment for up to three years, or both. For continuing offences, additional fines of up to RM1,000 per day or part of a day may be imposed after conviction."

He also pointed out that some laundry operators are still unaware of or are neglecting the legal and safety standards, which can result in accidents, fires, or explosions due to gas leaks.

In addition to organising awareness seminars, ECoS will conduct regular inspections of laundry premises operating without a valid ECoS gas licence and issue warning letters to ensure compliance with the Gas Supply Enactment 2023 and the Gas Supply Regulations 2023.
